I'm so amazingly proud of myself, I'm just about ready to burst.
I'd compare it to pregnancy, but my decision to become an independent trainer with my own certification process was only THREE months ago! So far, I've created a whole organization - a code of ethics, standards of practice, certification process, web site, AND an entirely NEW updated, evidence based training on doula support! Including a 300 page manual!
YES, this manual and training is the most up to date on the science and research on doula support, including why Black doulas are so central to meeting the needs of Black families. It includes research on hospital based doulas and doula programs, the detailed emotional support strategies that doulas use, detailed doula self care, and a whole unit on implicit bias in doula care - and case studies to help us uncover and address our own biases and
oppressions.
I've been working with an Black educational consultant, whose chosen work is to help white educators like myself become better at welcoming and affirming Black people in the classroom. The work starts with me - but extends into the photos and materials I've chosen, the language I use, the print and screen graphics. I'm so much more confident that I know what learners need from me and the training -
whereas before I was guessing.
The work of doulas has grown - again - and I'm adapting and growing too as a trainer! Those of you that know me, know that I embrace the new and chuck out the old on a regular basis. About half of the material is entirely new - handouts, videos, even the information about positioning and comfort measures is updated. And advocacy has been given a complete overhaul. I took four doula trainings over the first twelve years of being a doula - and I learned a
lot from each one. So even if you've been doing this a while, our training and certification program has something to offer YOU!
The certification program is humming along. There's nothing like creating a program that empowers experienced doulas as leaders and mentors to new doulas. We're going to build an amazing community together.
But you know what? I really want to get back to doing my research - it's what the field needs, so if you think you are the right fit for working with Doulaing The Doula, let me know. I can start the organization but I don't want to run it from day to day. There's a whole page on the web site for you! https://doulaworkshop.com/want-to-join-us/
The best way to find out is to take the training - either on Wednesday evenings online or this September in Milwaukee or October in Madison!
