They've chosen the sessions on Newborn Communication SkillsFrom Lovers To Parents And Back Again: What Nurses and Professionals Need To Know About Perinatal Sexuality, and my revised session on trauma! Trauma Prevention and Support for Laboring People With Hidden or Existing PTSD. Brief descriptions are on the WFD form, long descriptions and objectives and are on my site.

For the last year I've been working hard to create a new SKILL BUILDING workshop on Newborn Communication.  What if newborns were communicating all the time and adults just weren't skilled at reading it?  What if instead of assuming their movements and sounds were random, we assumed they actually meant something?  What might babies be communicating to us?  That's the core of the workshop:  to build on what perinatal professionals already know about newborn cues and temperament, develop your observational skills, increase your confidence in what you observe, and help you to talk with parents to create knowledge together about their child.  Sounds like a dream?  Not anymore!

This workshop has been approved as appropriate for nurses for three continuing education hours by the WNA.  Every birth organization accepts WNA nursing CE's.

"From Lovers To Parents And Back Again: What Nurses and Professionals Need To Know About Perinatal Sexuality" has been approved for two CE's by the Wisconsin Nurses Association.  Over 80% of parents report difficulties with sexual adjustment in the first year, with the majority wanting information and guidance from doctors, midwives, and nurses. Fewer than 16% report receiving any information at all. Sexuality education is ignored or deemphasized in most medical and nursing school curriculums making it doubly challenging for the caring health professional who wants to meet this need. No one wants to feel they don't know enough about sex, especially a health professional! But no one ever knows as much as they want to . This session fills that gap in knowledge and practice for health practitioners as well as other professionals who work with postpartum families. Doulas and any other professionals working with pregnant or postpartum families will get a lot out of this workshop.

Trauma Prevention and Support for Laboring People With Hidden or Existing PTSD
Slightly less than half of women of childbearing age have experienced a sexually violating event that could be encoded as traumatic. This informative session covers the normal and altered neurological function of the attachment and defense systems in the laboring person’s brain; research on how pre-existing PTSD alters social behaviors and labor coping; and actions and interventions that can be taken by medical careproviders and labor support team members to prevent further trauma of the vulnerable laboring person and positive labor progress.
