Hello Everyone!

I've been out of touch lately, as my favorite aunt passed away last month. My role was to support her in her choices during the several months of her dying and then to handle all of her affairs after her passing. So I've been living in her San Francisco apartment for several weeks, sorting through her memories and deciding which to pass along and what will end with her. I consider it a sacred task, one that years of doulaing prepared me for.

As doulas we're in the heart of things when risk and injury are part of the conversation. We understand what people actually think about in those moments. We sit with people when they are in great distress and know the powerlessness of not being able to change a painful circumstance. When you open your heart up as a doula this is what really happens to you. Over the decades it has changed me and made me a better person. I know what matters from deep within my being. I'm better able to offer compassion to myself as well as others when I encounter the pain of life.

I hope you've found the same strength inside yourself when you needed it. It's easy to find in the heart of a doula.
