Exciting Research News! A Postcard from Doulaland!

Hello from Doulaland!

Autumn has long been my least favorite season with its reminders of endings and death.  Great mindset, huh?  This year I decided to change my "frame".  What if I approached fall as a season of preparing to rest?  Doesn't the earth deserve to rest after spending all that time creating beauty and new life?  Enjoy the splendor as it settles down, Amy.
It didn't come easy but it worked!  This has been one of my most enjoyable autumns. The gentle invitation to explore a different perspective is one of my more potent doula strategies. Rather than pressure or convince, I gently invite clients to try on a perspective as if they were trying on a coat.  Just to see where it fits and where it doesn't, and it can always be taken off or put on again.  This approach is soft and pliable and allows people to move at their own pace.  This is especially important if they're having experiences causing them to question their beliefs or values around birth.

Warmly,

Amy
Research News!!

I got a research fellowship!!  After graduating with my Ph.D. in 2010, I had to prove myself as an independent researcher in order to qualify for a fellowship. Being allied with the university allows me to have access to their resources to continue doing research projects. I will have support through the University of Wisconsin Madison's School of Human Ecology's Center for Child and Family Well Being.  Can you think of a better spot for a doula researcher?
It means I can access statistic labs, research design experts, library resources, and collaborate with other staff and professors. In exchange I'm expected to publish.  Not a problem!

Next, my article, “What Motivates People To Take Doula Trainings?” was recently published in the Journal of Perinatal Education, Summer 2016, Vol 25, No. 3.  This research project took years to do and another year to get published! I'll be exploring my findings in a personal way in the next three blog posts on Doulaing The Doula. It's more fascinating than you might expect, and reveals a lot about our changing culture in north America.

Want to know why only a few people in your training actually became doulas?  Here's a two minute video that answers that question and introduces more intriguing ones answered in my next three blog posts!
