Hi there community!
As some of you know, I've been studying and living with doula certification for decades now. I have a love/hate relationship with it. "Love" because it enables doulas to interface with systems, and most doulas like achieving something. "Hate" because it usually is approval from "without" by strangers and has all the rules of the types of systems we want to eradicate. Most certifications are based in old (white, colonizing) ways of
thinking.
When I finally asked myself the question, "What would you create for doula certification if you had the opportunity?" I sketched out my ideas, and I consulted others whose perspectives I trusted. Then, I fell in love with these ideas and I knew I couldn't go back to an old way of thinking. (Want more?)
So here's how/why we're unique:
1. Our certification process is built around your natural development as a doula. It's based in research on what makes doulas succeed.
2. It's relationship based - we know you as a person.
3. We created a system that helps you succeed.
4. It recognizes our uniqueness as doulas, for example, our ethnicities and cultures; the differing abilities of our bodies; and our need to provide and receive Trauma Informed Care.
5. Our credentials are legitimate and respected by health care administrators and others.
